Background
Greed is a 1924 American silent drama written and directed by Erich von Stroheim for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, adapted from Frank Norris's novel 'McTeague.' Von Stroheim's original cut ran roughly eight hours before the studio drastically shortened it against his wishes; the surviving release version is nonetheless regarded as one of the greatest films ever made. Published in 1924, the film print's 95-year US copyright term has expired, placing the photoplay in the public domain by term expiry.
