Rights, layer by layer
A film is not one copyright — it is several. Each layer below can be free or protected independently. This is why one-click “public domain” answers are wrong so often.

Background
The Ace of Hearts is a 1921 American crime drama produced and directed by Wallace Worsley for Goldwyn Pictures, starring Lon Chaney and Leatrice Joy in a story of a secret vigilante society that plots an assassination. It reunited Chaney and Worsley after their earlier collaboration on The Penalty (1920). As a 1921 US publication, the film print is public domain by expiry of the 95-year US copyright term; other layers remain undetermined.
