Background
The Kid is a 1921 American silent comedy-drama written, directed by, produced by and starring Charlie Chaplin, his first feature-length film as a director, distributed by First National. Chaplin's Tramp raises an abandoned boy (Jackie Coogan) in a story that fused slapstick with sentiment in a way then novel for a comedy feature. Published in 1921, the film print's US copyright term has expired, placing the photoplay in the public domain by term expiry. Note that Chaplin's re-edited 1971 reissue, with a musical score he then composed, carries its own separate and later rights.
