Background
The Sheik is a 1921 American silent romantic drama directed by George Melford and produced by Famous Players-Lasky (Paramount), starring Rudolph Valentino and Agnes Ayres. Adapted from Edith Maude Hull's bestselling novel, its runaway success made Valentino an international star and a defining screen idol of the 1920s. Published in 1921, the film print's 95-year US copyright term has expired, placing the photoplay in the public domain by term expiry.
