Is The Unholy Three (1925) public domain?
Pre-1972 sound recordings can be protected under US state law and the Music Modernization Act until 2067 or later — the print being public domain does not free the recorded music.

Rights, layer by layer
A film is not one copyright — it is several. Each layer below can be free or protected independently. This is why one-click “public domain” answers are wrong so often.

Background
The Unholy Three is a 1925 American silent crime melodrama directed by Tod Browning for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, starring Lon Chaney as a sideshow ventriloquist who leads a trio of circus grifters into a robbery-and-murder spree. It cemented the Browning-Chaney partnership and was successful enough that Chaney remade it as his only sound film in 1930 (a separate, later work with its own rights). As a 1925 US publication, the film print is public domain by expiry of the 95-year US copyright term; other layers remain undetermined.
