Is The Unknown (1927) public domain?
Pre-1972 sound recordings can be protected under US state law and the Music Modernization Act until 2067 or later — the print being public domain does not free the recorded music.

Rights, layer by layer
A film is not one copyright — it is several. Each layer below can be free or protected independently. This is why one-click “public domain” answers are wrong so often.

Background
The Unknown is a 1927 American silent horror film directed by Tod Browning for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, starring Lon Chaney as 'Alonzo the Armless,' a carnival knife-thrower, and a young Joan Crawford as the woman he loves. Widely regarded as the finest of the Browning-Chaney collaborations, it was thought lost until a print was recovered from the Cinematheque Francaise in 1968. As a 1927 US publication, the film print is in the public domain by expiry of the 95-year copyright term; score, story, and restoration layers are left undetermined pending their own evidence.
